Inspection Checklist

The form provided in this section is not intended to take the place of a pre-purchase inspection or appraisal performed by a professional which is nearly always advisable for situations when those involved are not experienced in such things or when the examination cannot be done in person.

We suggest that the form be used as an aid and guide for preliminary inspections in person by non-professionals. The form might also be sent to an owner or friend or relative for a guideline for the evaluation of a car that cannot be easily checked out in person.

Clearly, the form does not reflect a full and thorough inspection. Rather, we have attempted to cover most of the important points that might be covered in an initial inspection; i.e., the form is fairly thorough but not exhaustive. For this reason, if no other, simply following this form should not be considered a substitute for a professional inspection. But, except for the finer details, it should allow most users the ability to more or less accurately assess a car to within one of the six general condition numbers.
